Police step up patrols due to holiday driving dangers

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

Owensboro police tell 14 News that they plan to increase patrols over the holidays.

Christmas and New Year's are among the most dangerous driving days of the year with a spike in drunken driving accidents.

Last year, officers in Owensboro made 25 DUI arrests during the holiday months.

In addition to patrol units working, the department will also perform one check point somewhere in the city between now and January 1.

"Going to have a lot of traffic on the road ways, parties and that type of thing. We want to make sure we are out in full force looking for that DUI or impaired driver so we can keep everyone safe," said Michael Hathaway, the Public Information Officer for Owensboro police.

Officers are urging drivers to stay safe this holiday season by designating a sober driver and by calling in, if you see a drunk driver out on the road.
