McDonald's to close at Ind. children's hospital

Posted: Updated:

A McDonald's restaurant that served up burgers and fries for years in a central Indiana children's hospital is closing its doors amid concerns that fast-food sends the wrong message to patients.

The McDonald's eatery at Riley Hospital for Children will close at the end of December.

Riley's chief operating officer Russ Williams tells The Indianapolis Star it no longer made sense for the hospital to provide a home to a restaurant that features sodas and high-salt foods.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine issued a report last January that named Riley one of the five worst children's hospitals for its food environment.

But the parents of some Riley patients say the restaurant's food often brightened the day for young ailing patients.
