Jasper Library gets tough on overdue books

JASPER, IN (WFIE) -

A new chapter has been written in an attempt to retrieve unreturned books and overdue fees at Jasper Library.

14 News has learned the library is now going to court.

If you have overdue books belonging to the Jasper Library, you have the opportunity to return those books by the end of this year, free of charge. But if you don't do that, starting next year, the library will see you in small claims court.

Library branch manager Christine Golden says the library is owed over $60,000 in overdue fines and missing books. So starting January 1, the library will start contacting patrons with the highest overdue fines to let them know the library will be suing to recover the fines and to pay for those missing books.

"Through the end of the year, the board has decided to run an amnesty period, where anybody with items that are long overdue can bring those items back, and have the price of the item forgiven, the processing fees and fines and all that forgiven. Basically, everything but the collection agency fines," Golden said.

If you want to avoid the cost of late fees and small claims court, you must return your books to the library before January 1.
