Renovations moving along in old downtown post office

Posted: Updated:

Owners of the old post office in downtown Evansville updated the Redevelopment Commission on the status of the 138 year old building on Tuesday morning.

Workers are doing exterior work on the roof and gutters. On the inside, they're renovating the second and third floors, which will house offices for the social security administration.

Owner Bashar Hamami says it's been an amazing project to work on.

"It's easily the most beautiful building in the whole city. I mean we only have two or three of what I consider architectural treasures, and to be a part of preserving this architectural treasure is really an honor," Hamami said.

Renovations started about two years ago. The first floor was renovated as a banquet facility, and is already open.

Hamami expects to have all the renovations done by early summer.
