Groundbreaking date set for Evansville's new downtown convention hotel

Posted: Updated:

January 23, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.    That's when groundbreaking will take place on the new DoubleTree Hotel & Convention Center in downtown Evansville.

The date still needs to be approved by the Evansville Redevelopment Commission.  They meet tomorrow.

A funding plan for the downtown convention hotel was unanimously approved by the Evansville City Council in September.

The $71.3 million project will be funded by four different sources.

The Vanderburgh County Commission has committed and approved $3.5 million. The city will be responsible for $20 million.

Private investors have come forward, led by Bob Jones of Old National Bank, and pledged between $13 million and $15 million.

Hotel developer, HCW, will be left to pay between $32.8 million and $34.8 million.
