TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -
The driver of a stolen car involved in a freeway pursuit remains in the hospital with injuries suffered after he jumped over a freeway wall and fell at least 80 feet in the early morning hours of Friday, Dec. 13.
Edmund Powers, 44, remained in Scottsdale Healthcare-Osborn Hospital, where he is recovering from a broken leg, broken pelvis and other injuries suffered when he leaped from the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway.
The pursuit began about 3:30 a.m. when Arizona Department of Public Safety officers spotted a car that was stolen the evening of Dec. 12 from Tempe Marketplace at Taser-point, said Tempe police Sgt. Dale Hoobler.
Tempe police lost the car Thursday after it fled the shopping center and headed into Phoenix near Phoenix-Sky Harbor International Airport before it was spotted by DPS and Mesa police officers early Friday.
The car, a 1998 Ford Crown Victoria, was subsequently reported to have been involved in the robbery of an adult bookstore in East Mesa, Hoobler said.
DPS officers deployed spike strips at Dobson Road to stop the car on westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway, and the car eventually stopped between McClintock Road and the Loop 101 Price/Pima Freeway. The driver jumped from the car, ran and leaped over a nearby wall, falling to the ground below.
Hoobler said Powers was conscious and moving, but badly injured, and Hoobler said he was surprised the Powers survived the approximately eight-story fall.
Hoobler said it took about an hour to get Powers out of the area and to the hospital.
The Taser believed to have been used to carjack the Ford was found with Powers, Hoobler said.
A woman in the car was taken into custody by DPS officers, Hoobler said, but it was not known whether she played a role in the carjacking.
Southbound Loop 101 Price Freeway to westbound Loop 202 was closed for the investigation.
The car was taken from a woman who was waiting for her boyfriend, who was closing up the Men's Wearhouse about 9 p.m.
No other injuries were reported.
Tempe police have not said whether Powers has been charged.
