Winter Storm leaves slick roads, power outages

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A fine mist of freezing rain fell early Sunday morning leaving already slick roads even more dangerous. The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department reported at 8:30am Sunday nearly every road had some form of ice on it.

Entergy Arkansas reported just over 300 without power early Sunday morning. Entergy Spokesperson David Burnette said additional crews were in the area to put power back on. Burnette said they should get power restored to residents in eastern Poinsett and southern Mississippi Counties Sunday.

Approximately one half inch of freezing rain covered trees, power lines, and cars in eastern Arkansas where most of the power outages occurred.

The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department had road crews out spreading sand and pushing as much of the ice off the roadway. The state is not as equipped to handle the winter weather as states to the north where weather is more common.

Prepare a survival kit now if you must travel with extra blankets, battery jumper cables, and a bag of sand or cat litter for traction if needed.
