A Henderson County man crossing the highway to get his mail was hit and killed by a pickup truck Monday afternoon.
Witnesses on the scene tell 14 News that they were driving by on Highway 359, near the Smith Mill area and saw the victim getting his mail. They say he was smiling and waving to them as they drove by.
"I'd stop by when I was going into town or something and say hey. It'd make his day because he was just in there all by himself. He was a pretty happy person. He liked painting and being around his family. Whenever we were younger, he dressed up like Santa Claus for Christmas and playing his harmonica for us," Utley said.
The family say they are thankful for those witnesses that stayed by his side. The driver was not injured and officials say it doesn't look like he will be facing any charges.
Highway 359 was shut down in that area for a couple of hours. The roadway has since been reopened.
