City officials dedicated a street and statue to Major League Baseball Manager and Evansville native, Don Mattingly on Sunday. He was there to see it firsthand.
Current L.A. Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly grew up in Evansville which is why city council voted to approve 'Don Mattingly Way' in August.
Don Mattingly Way is the new name for a street that passes through Bosse Field and into Garvin Park. The street was previously called North Main Street.
Officials unveiled a 7ft limestone statue of Mattingly that will be set at the North Little League Park. That's where he started his baseball career.
Mattingly thanked the crowd for the honor and talked about his childhood baseball memories.
"It's funny because like I said earlier, a lot of things have happened to me, a lot of good things you know, nice awards and things like that, but this really is something special to me," said Mattingly. "It's really nice. I think it's because of where I grew up and you have such good memories of where you grew up and how you learned to play."
The non-profit Tri-State Hot Stove League is paying for the road signs in Garvin Park.
