LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – November is National Adoption Month and on Friday a family went from two to six, adopting four children.
It was picture day inside the Jefferson County Judicial Center. Jonathan, 10, Jazmine, 6, Christina, 2, and Kyle, 19 months, couldn't stop smiling. Neither could Michael and Ashley Wells.
These siblings have been through a lot over the years, but inside the courtroom a chapter was just beginning.
A judge granted the Wells to adopt all four children.
"It's official," said Michael. "It's amazing."
The emotions were all around.
"It makes me feel like we are a whole family now and I'm so happy," said Jazmine.
But before this feeling of joy, there was heartache on both sides.
"January of 2006 we started trying to have biological children and it was in early 2009 that God really shut the door on that," said Ashley Wells.
The Wells felt called to adopt so they went through the Home of the Innocents foster care program and immediately they were needed.
Susan Dever is the paternal grandmother of the four children. As tough as it was to accept, she knew the children were better off not in their biological parent's care.
"My biggest fear was the kids being separated and to know that somebody is willing to take four children in and to just love them like they've loved them," said Dever.
Grandma Susie will continue to remain in the children's lives. "They've got very opened hearts and I've got fabulous grandkids," said Dever.
When the couple took in the children 19 months ago it took some getting use to for everybody.
"It was very rough in the beginning, but you can see they've adjusted. Jonathan instead of calling me Michael is now calling me Dad and Kyle learning how to say Daddy, you can just see it slowly progressing over time," said Michael.
Now they couldn't imagine being anywhere else.
"God gave me a mom and dad that love me," said Jazmine.
In this family, that love will remain forever.
"I love them and I will never not love them," said Jonathan.
