The St. Louis Cardinals have given a three-year contract extension to manager Mike Matheny, who has made deep postseason runs in both of his seasons.

The Cardinals lost the World Series in six games to the Boston Red Sox this fall and were one game shy of reaching the World Series in 2012, his first season managing at any level.

The team also announced Wednesday that pitcher Chris Carpenter has retired. The 38-year-old right-hander missed all of this season with a recurring nerve issue in his shoulder.
