Avoid freezing pipes as the temps get cold

Posted: Updated:

These cold temperatures can wreak havoc on your water pipes.

Local heating and air company J.E. Shekell has a few tips to avoid those freezing pipes.

They say you should remove hoses from outside hydrants to allow them to properly drain, inspect your basement for areas where cold outdoor air could pass through, and to cover exposed outdoor pipes with 'heat tape.'

If you don't, they say winter could become very costly.

"It'd be very expensive, not just for the repair of the pipe, but I've seen it ruin floors and drywall and ceilings, flood basements. It'll ruin your furnace and your water heaters. It just goes on and on," said Jay Howder, with J.E. Shekell.

Howder says you can easily inspect your basement with the lights off since incoming light will indicate where the cracks are.
