Times-Dispatch to charge extra for issues with Black Friday ads

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Those Black Friday ads you get in the Richmond Times-Dispatch may actually cost you more this year.

The newspaper will start charging some home subscribers more for all those hefty Black Friday and day after Christmas ads that come with the paper, whether you want them or not.

A letter sent to EZ Pay subscribers states the added fees will partially cover the newspapaers added expenses.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch will now charge EZ Pay subscribers a premium rate of $2.35 for the Thanksgiving paper and $1.50 for the Christmas Holiday Edition which will now come with a few extras pages.

The letter says the Thanksgiving newspaper is the most expensive to produce and difficult to distribute. Last year's subscription weighed 5 pounds and this year carriers will need additional help to complete deliveries on time.

"It's sad, I think we are the last generation who will become regular newspaper readers," she Chesterfield resident Terry Gerrard. She doesn't want the ads and even called the Times-Dispatch about it. "I asked if I could get the newspaper without the ads because I feel the majority of them go right into recycle, and they told me, 'no, that's not possible.'"

You have until the day before Thanksgiving or Christmas to call the Times-Dispatch to let them know you don't want the paper on those days. That's one way to avoid the extra fee.

The Times-Dispatch has also started charging frequent online readers to read more than 20 articles on line a month.
