A 15-foot-tall bronze statue of basketball great Larry Bird has been lowered into place at Indiana State University more than three decades after Bird was a student there.

A crane positioned the 1,900-pound statue Monday outside the Terre Haute campus' Hulman Center.

Bird led Indiana State to a national championship game in 1979 before he became one of the greatest players in NBA history.

Crane operator Brent Clark tells The Tribune-Star he had season tickets during Bird's senior year at ISU and attended every home game.

Sculptor Bill Wolfe says he had the statue swiveled a little to the left as it was being lowered onto a concrete base because he wanted Bird's eyes lined up with an adjacent intersection to ensure he was in perfect shooting form.
