Less food stamps has families turning to Food Banks

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Starting November 1, people who receive SNAP or Food Stamp Benefits will see a reduction in funds. That is because an increase in the funding that was approved back in 2009 to stimulate the economy has expired.

It is day one, and already Precious McQuinn is feeling the impact of less SNAP Benefits. She says $30 to $40 being taken away from her monthly allowance is forcing her family to possibly seek help elsewhere.

"Go to churches that are giving out food, but I shouldn't have to, you know, go that far to be standing in line and then when we get there to the food banks it's like everything is gone. We are losing. We are not getting anything," McQuinn said.

The Food Bank at FeedMore in Richmond is hoping to change that. Already there are several pushes to encourage people to donate to the food bank.

"We know that our partners are feeling a little bit so we need a successful food drive like scouting for food to give online we need people to volunteer," Jeff Baldwin said.

Jeff Baldwin with FeedMore says it expects to see a significant influx in people needing food because of food stamp benefit reductions. Baldwin says it is ready to step in and help all they can.

"We serve 31 counties, so it's a huge process, a huge undertaking for about a 3rd of the state, so we are there to meet those needs, whatever those needs in the community are," Baldwin said.

The bank distributes about 21 million pounds of food each year and also runs a full service Meal Kitchen and provide Meals on Wheels to elderly and disable people.

Though going to a food bank isn't Precious McQuinn's ideal choice, she says with her SNAP Benefits "taken" from her, its the only choice she will have.

On Saturday, about 8,000 Boy Scouts in Central Virginia will stop by neighborhoods to pick up bags of food for the Feedmore food banks.

If one of the Boy Scout bags was left at your door, you can fill it with non perishable food and leave it outside for pickup or take it directly to Feedmore.
