MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK: Second hand expert shares tips to save money

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Assembling a polished, professional wardrobe can cost a fortune, but it doesn't have to.

Sydney Lester showed us how you can look your best without breaking the bank. She lives by the rule...second hand first.

"Thrift stores or consignment stores, antique stores, even hand-me-downs," said Lester.

Her closet is full of fashion. Most of it is second hand - like her belts, shoes, clutches and skirts.

Sydney shops consignment stores like Ashby in Carytown because the fashions are up to date and sorted by size.

"It's a great bargain, because you find a lot of the labels you'd find at the mall or at other boutiques even in the neighborhood, but the prices are tremendously lower," said Ashby store manager Shauna Smith.

Sydney looks for individual pieces, not an entire outfit. Plus, she makes money selling the clothes she doesn't wear.

"If I'm short on time, I'll go to accessories, you can almost never not find anything..a necklace, a watch or a belt," said Sydney.

She loves Finicky Fox at Gayton Crossing because they're picky about stocking high quality clothing, shoes and jewelry with huge discounts. The bonus?

"They'll mark things down up to 75% off that price."

A $68 necklace is only $17. Sydney will play the waiting game to get the best deal possible.

"They can shop second hand...and they can put together fantastic outfits that no one would ever guess came from a second hand store."

Sydney details her outfits on her personal style blog, Chic Stripes. She tells you where the shops are, the pricepoints of each and what kind of brands they carry.
