Evansville Police are cautioning parents that as they have seen an increase in gun violence in the community, they have also seen an increase in kids carrying replica guns in neighborhoods.
EPD says these are not toy guns, they are replica and are designed by the manufacturer to look like real guns. They are designed to shoot projectiles. They shoot steel BB's or soft plastic BB's.
Police say the realism of these guns is so accurate that the manufacturers have put warnings on the packaging such as:
DO NOT BRANDISH OR DISPLAY THIS PRODUCT IN PUBLIC- IT MAY CONFUSE PEOPLE AND MAY BE A CRIME. POLICE AND OTHERS MAY THINK IT IS A FIREARM.
"WARNING: NOT A TOY. ADULT SUPERVISION REQUIRED. MISUSE OR CARELESS USE MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH."
Evansville Police say other communities have had to deal with real life tragedies because someone confronted a cop or an armed citizen with one of these guns.
EPD says these tragedies are 100% preventable and are asking parents to talk with their kids about the dangerous situation they can find themselves in if they chose to ignore the warnings about these guns.
Their life may depend on it.
