Posey Co. inmates starting new with Bible study

POSEY CO., IN (WFIE) -

A new group meeting inside the Posey County Jail is turning things around and giving hope to those serving time.

A Bible study with eight to ten male inmates meets every Monday night to give them a foundation in which to grow.

"Usually when I'm hanging out with these guys, it's not to read the Bible. But now we're in here and we're all trying to do the same things," said Posey County inmate Daniel Sherratz.

There's no talk of the past and no mention of what got them there. There's just Bibles and prayers to help these men focus on the future and not the everyday trials of life behind bars.

"It gets emotional, and the easiest way to deal with emotions is to keep yourself distracted and a lot of that comes through chaos and nonsense. But instead, we're using Scripture instead of that distraction we're used to," Sherratz said.

Since December, group organizers, like Andy Fischer, have been holding the Monday meetings.

"We're a family. We're a family," Fischer said. "If Monday nights don't happen for me, usually it affects the rest of the week."

Sheriff Greg Oeth says since the Bible study began, the atmosphere inside the jail has changed.

"Our problems and issues that could result in fights and those kind of things have greatly diminished," Oeth said.

For inmate Jesse Crane, a brand new baby boy is giving him new motivation.

"I sure don't need to be in these kinds of places. He needs his daddy," Crane said.

Because in at the Posey County Jail, Monday might just be the best day of the week.

"A new way of life, you know, less stressful. But I don't need that chaos, I don't have to have that anymore," Sherratz said.

Organizers say there is a waiting list for inmates who want to join the group and a number of the men have only been attending for a few weeks.
