Posted: Updated:
PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) -

Investigators are calling a fire at a Petersburg plant that injured two people an accident.

Crews responded to Valmont Coatings Virginia Galvanizing in the 3500 block of Halifax Road around 8:13 p.m. Saturday for reports of fire. Officials tell us it took until 11:40 p.m. Saturday to bring the blaze under control due to chemical run-off. There is major damage to the front of the building. Preliminary damage estimates are about $500,000. It is believed the fire is accidental.

A firefighter was taken to Southside Regional Medical Center with minor injuries to the eyes. He has now been released from the hospital. One person also suffered burns to his feet, but was treated at the scene. They say no employees were inside of the building at the time of the fire.

The Crater Hazmat Regional team assisted, but officials say there was no danger of chemical exposure. A chemical spill team is removing all run-offs at the plant today.
