TELL CITY, IN (WFIE) -

After sustaining severe fire damage last week, the Capers restaurant building in downtown Tell City is crumbling. Officials are asking people to stay away from the area.

Tell City Fire Chief Greg Linne says the part of the building collapsed on Wednesday, after fire investigators began excavation work.

He says they aren't sure exactly what the next step is.

The back corner of the building has been destroyed and Linne says fire investigators are trying to determine whether or not to keep digging into the building to find out what caused the fire.

Officials say the building is still very unstable and parts of Mozart and Main Street are still blocked off. Crews are also working to protect the adjacent building that houses Insurance Advantage.

"What they have done, they've actually built, framed up a safety roof on top of it with 3/4-inch plywood and some other stuff, just in case there are any bricks that fall. But at this time, it's just hard to tell what the north wall may do," Linne says.

Linne says he's not sure how long the streets around capers will remain shut down, but he's hopeful they'll reopen by this weekend.
