Officials with the North Charleston Police Department say a man attacked a prostitute after the woman refused to continue a sex act, citing an irregularity with his genitalia.
Investigators charged 50-year-old Mikell Todd Nelson with soliciting for prostitution and third-degree assault and battery. Police also charged 40-year-old Shannon Ann Bonilla with loitering for the purpose of prostitution.
On Tuesday around 1:41 a.m., police officers responded to a report of a man who would not let a woman out of his car. Dispatch operators told authorities that the vehicle was traveling to Hanahan, and the woman was still on the phone talking to 911 operators.
Officers spotted the car and initiated a traffic stop in the area of Murray Drive and John Rutledge Avenue. According to a police report, Nelson, the driver of the car, said it all started when he was looking for a prostitute to perform a sex act on him.
Nelson said he picked Bonilla up on the corner of North Rhett and Sumner Avenues, and asked her if she would perform a sex act on him. A police report states Bonilla agreed. Investigators say fifteen dollars was exchanged and Bonilla began to perform a sex act on Nelson as he was driving the car.
An NCPD incident report states that at one point, Bonilla stopped because she said there was something wrong with the man's genitalia. According to authorities, Bonilla refused to continue the sex act, at which point Nelson demanded his money back.
Authorities say a physical altercation started as the man attempted to get his money back.
Bonilla told police that Nelson struck her in the head several times during the altercation.
A police report states Bonilla, who was "heavily intoxicated," called 911 and told authorities that a man would not let her out of his vehicle, and told 911 operators that she was not a prostitute.
Police say Bonilla kept hanging up on 911 operators.
