WEST FRANKFORT, IL (KFVS) -
A West Frankfort man sat behind bars after police say he ran two women over, then left the scene on Sunday night.
It was shortly after 7 p.m. when 53-year-old Anita Austin says her nephew stopped by her house with a female friend. That female friend ended up being the girlfriend of the accused 25-year-old James Lenzie.
Austin says a short while after the girl was at her house she called Lenzie to come pick her up.
When Lenzie arrived, Austin says the two got into a fight in her front yard.
"I told him he needed to leave and to stop hitting his girlfriend," said Austin. "I wasn't fighting with him, it was him and his girlfriend. And I don't stand for any guy treating a woman like that."
What happened next Austin says was very scary.
"He hit the girl and then he jumped in his truck and fishtailed out of there hitting me and knocking me to the ground," Austin said. "Then he came back and drover over top of me. I have two broken legs from my knees down to my toes. And lots of bruised and road-rash on my hips and arms."
Austin's neighbor 37-year-old Anita Ausec saw what had happened and ran over to help her neighbor get up off the ground.
"He took off and Anita hit the ground," Ausec said. " He stopped near the stop sign and that's when I saw the reverse lights come on. And he was headed right towards her, I tried to move her. And he ran me and Anita over. He only got my leg, but Anita was hurt pretty bad. I think he was actually trying to kill her."
Police caught up with Lenzie a short time later at his father's house on East Poplar Street.
Lenzie has been charged with two counts of reckless conduct, one count of aggravated battery and two counts of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident. He remained behind bars in the Franklin County Jail on Monday.
