Sign up for Christmas help at The Salvation Army

Posted: Updated:

It's never too early to start your holiday shopping, especially for those gifts being donated to families in need.

Monday was the first day for families in Vanderburgh and Warrick County to start registering for that Christmas assistance.

Families who are unable to provide Christmas dinner and gifts to their immediate family are eligible for help. The gift program provides toys, games and movies to newborns to 12 year old children.

If you're applying, you need to bring proof of all income and proof of household expenses. This includes proof of things like food stamps, rent receipts and Vectren bills.

Applicants also need social security cards for everyone in their household and a picture ID for themselves. Officials say the process can move quickly if you come prepared.

The Salvation Army gets the program set well before the holidays so they can plan for fundraiser to meet the need.

"The need is going to be great. Last year, we took care of more children. I think our number on children doubled than over the previous year. I look for that to still be a high number this year. Last year, it was over 2,000 children, so I'm looking that the need will be still be great this year," said Gwen Rode with the Salvation Army.

You can register at The Salvation Army on Fulton this week and next week from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. They will also be open on Thursday from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
