Community gathers to support family of Ryan Peters

A large fundraiser was held on Saturday in Owensboro for the family of Ryan Peters, the 21-year-old who was killed during an accident at a race track back in September.

Peters was a big part of the racing community, so they decided to remember him in a big way.

In a live and silent auction, more than 300 donated items went to the highest bidder. A grand total of $6,110 was raised for the Peters family in just three hours.

It was an out-pouring of support organized by someone who hardly even knew Peters, but just wanted to take care of his family and those that were closest to him.

"I think everybody could have taken a lesson from Ryan. He marched to the beat of his own drum, that's for sure. He was an outcast and he didn't care. One heck of a mechanic and a best friend a guy could ask for," said Clay Davis, Peters friend.

"They had a lot of plans. We had built a garage. He had bought another car and he was ready to race next year," Peters grandmother, Janice Peters, said.

His family and the racing community are working to keep memories alive with events like this one, one that Peters' best friend says really warms your heart.
