Police say a pastor helped stop a robbery at an Evansville business on Friday night.

Evansville police said 25-year-old Jermaine Dewayne Marshall walked into the Dollar General Store in the 700 block of Lincoln Avenue just after 6:30 on Friday. Witnesses say Marshall had a bandana pulled over his face.

Officers said Marshall demanded the worker at the register turn over the money. They said Marshall had a plastic bag wrapped around an object that resembled a firearm.

When the worker refused to turn over the money, police said Marshall hit him at least twice in the face.

Police said Pastor Carl Sanders was walking into the store when he noticed the robbery. They said Sanders showed his own gun and held the suspect in the store until police arrived.

Marshall was arrested and taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail on charges of armed robbery and strong armed robbery with injury.

Authorities say the object Marshall presented as a gun was a spoon wrapped in a plastic bag.

There were at least two other employees and two customers in the store at the time of the robbery. No one was reported injured.
