JONESBORO, AR (KAIT)- Nearly 100 local
veterans came out Saturday for the first Northeast Arkansas Veterans Benefit
Seminar at the St. Bernard Auditorium.
Vermalene Smith is the Craighead County Veteran Service Officer and said there are over 30,000 veterans in Northeast Arkansas and nearly 8,000 in Craighead County alone.
She said they decided to have this seminar to inform veterans of the benefits available to them and to hear from the people who make the decisions on their claims.
"We have so many veterans out here who are really no aware of that they may be entitled to benefits and that's our message today," Smith said. "They will get directions from the top people, the people who make the decisions on their claims."
The speakers from the event were from the Arkansas Veteran Affairs and the federal regional office in Little Rock.
Smith said she also wanted veterans to know they are back at work since the government re-opened.
"Everyone is back at work and we are also going to start doing orientation classes at the American Legion," Smith said.
The classes will he every first and third Monday of the month from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
