Financial report in the hands of state officials

The City of Evansville is keeping an eye on its financial future.

City leaders hope an audit that's underway right now by the state won't turn out like the last one. They say they are doing everything they can to make sure that doesn't happen.

There has been controversy over a report written by City Council Consultant David Garrett that was handed over to the State Board of Accounts.

City Controller Russ Lloyd Jr. says that report is not accurate and could come with some consequences. Lloyd tells 14 News that he's been in talks with the state, assuring them the city's finances are in order and any past problems have been resolved.

But if that state board does see things Garrett's way and gives the city a less than favorable audit, the city could be dealing with an image problem much like the federal government has been worried about.

If it appears their finances are out of order, businesses might want to look elsewhere.

"In the investment community, they'd look at that and say, 'There's something going on in Evansville that they can't get their accounting records in order.' We had to talk to Standard and Poor last year as well as Moody's and said, 'Well here's what happened,' and we laid out, provided documentation on what the city was doing to address the problems. It would be a black eye in the investment community," Lloyd said.

We're told the state report should be out in about three weeks.
