GIBSON CO., IN (WFIE) -

Officials say $8 million dollars in upgrades are planned for the Gibson County Fairgrounds.

The buildings at the fairgrounds are a little bit rundown and the concession stands are more than 50 years old. The plan will replace them with an events center that will seat more than 600 people.

Along with that events center, a merchant building, a new 4-H Center, new offices, and new storage units would be built, according to project manager Jeff Clark.

The $8.6 million plan was presented at the Gibson County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday night.

Clark says he hopes the project would be funded by tax increment financing assistance from the Gibson County Redevelopment Commission with $1.6 million to be used to improve water and electrical issues at the fairgrounds and the remaining $6 million to be used to build the new facilities.

Clark says he expects the project, especially the events center, to generate more support over the next few weeks.

"This will be a project that can benefit everybody in this county because 51 weeks of the year, that building can be used for other events. It's a year round facility this way where now as you can see it is not getting used, so we're trying to make it a year round multipurpose facility," Clark said.

On November 4, Clark says the Gibson County Commissioners will set a date to decide whether or not they can move forward with the project.
