Officials still discussing possible dismissal of EPD officer

Posted: Updated:

An EPD officer has been on unpaid suspension for past two weeks after an internal investigation into a recent incident.

The Police Merit Commission met in executive session for two hours on Monday afternoon to discuss Police Chief Billy Bolin's recommendation to dismiss Officer Steve Hicks.

Officials tell 14 News that the complaint filed by a citizen stems from a self-initiated stop by the officer to Rick's Bar at the corner of Columbia and North 3rd Avenue.

After an internal investigation, officials say the officer was inappropriate with a woman at that bar. Internal affairs reviewed witness testimony and surveillance video from the bar.

In his eight years with the Evansville Police Department, Officer Hicks earned Officer of the Month honors seven times. He was selected by his peers as the Field Training Officer of the Year in March 2012. Then in December of that same year, Officer Hicks was named 2012 Officer of the Year. Officials say Hicks was instrumental in cracking open a local drug case.

Officer Hicks began his unpaid suspension on October 1. He will be placed on paid suspension starting October 22 and will appeal Chief Bolin's recommendation for dismissal at the merit board meeting on November 4.
