Henderson and Evansville are working together to get a new bridge built over the Ohio River.

They announced a joint venture on Monday called Bridgelink, to push for the building of an interstate bridge connecting I-69 from Indiana to Western Kentucky.

Officials from both cities kicked off the push for a new bridge less than a mile from the Twin Bridges, the current connection between Evansville and Henderson.

Both Kentucky and Indiana have funding for I-69, which plans to run from the Great Lakes to Texas, but the one missing link is a bridge.

Henderson Mayor Steve Austin says a bridge must be built in order to make the I-69 project work.

"Should be a good economic development opportunity for us to set up companies in this area to supply both north and south on I-69. I think its probably the most important opportunity we've had in 20 years," Mayor Austin says.

Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke says the I-69 project is moving along, but a bridge needs to be built to link Kentucky and Indiana.

"Until there's a connector that links Evansville and Henderson over the Ohio River, it really just becomes a cul-de-sac and many people have used that analogy over the last several months. The fact of the matter is, economically, we're missing out on many opportunities by not having a better link across the Ohio River," Mayor Winnecke says.

Mayor Winnecke says there are a lot of steps before construction can begin. He says they will lobby in Indianapolis, Frankfort, and Washington to secure funding.
