Longtime Nut Clubber enjoying his 80th Fall Festival

Posted: Updated:

The West Side Nut Club Fall Festival on Franklin Street in Evansville brought out huge crowds on Friday with local children out of school for the day.

Along with the regular visitors across the Tri-State, people come from all over the country to visit the festival. Fall Festival organizers say they estimate around 100,000 people came out on Friday and they expect the same on Saturday.

Out of the hundreds of thousands of people that came out to enjoy the fun this week, there was one man who has been enjoying the fun for a very long time.

"I've been out here on the festival since I was old enough to walk around," Evansville native, Jim Voelker said.

The 82-year-old spent his week walking around his 80th Fall Festival.

"It was part of my life practically all my life," Voelker said.

Voelker has been a member of the West Side Nut Club since the 60s.

"There has been a lot of changes. What I can remember from the early years, it was more farmer oriented. Farmers would bring in their produce and display extra large or whatever it'd be in the store windows, and people would walk up and down the street looking at the store windows," Voelker said. "Every year it gets a little bit bigger and they do a lot of good for Evansville and the community really."

Now he enjoys the festival the way he has his whole life, walking around, seeing the people, and eating the food.

He says he's still young and has many more Fall Festivals to go.
