Posey County site chosen for billion dollar fertilizer plant

Posted: Updated:

A final site has been selected for the Midwest Fertilizer Plant in Posey County.

Economic Development Director John Taylor confirms to 14 News that the facility will be built on a plot of land at the intersection of Mackey Ferry Road and Sauerkraut Lane in Mount Vernon.

The $2.1 billion project is expected to create 200 high paying jobs as well as 2,500 construction jobs during the first three years.

The State of Indiana ended its role in Midwest fertilizer project financing back in June.

Governor Pence said the Department of Defense officials could not independently confirm the Fatima Group's promise to replace their current fertilizer in Pakistan with a formula less susceptible to misuse by hostile forces in the region.

Local officials moved forward with the project without the state's financing.

The county council reissued $1.3 billion in disaster relief bonds to the county's Economic Development Commission to move the project forward.

The official contract signing of Posey County's offer letter to Midwest Fertilizer Corporation will happen at 3:00 today.

14 News will have live updates at 4, 5 and 6.
