Oakland City upholds ban on farm animals within city limits

Posted: Updated:
GIBSON CO., IN (WFIE) -

Three families in Oakland City have to get rid of their farm animals by the end of year.

The city council voted on Tuesday night to uphold its ban on those animals within the city limits.

Last month the city council voted to allow one resident, Lana Myers-Getto, to keep her goats and chickens because she has diabetes and uses the animals for food and milk.

Myers-Getto told the council she has depression and the animals keep her going everyday.

But after the council discovered laws that date back to the early 50s, they went back on their unanimous vote to allow the animals, now telling Myers-Getto she cannot be "grandfathered in."

Supporters told 14 News that this is not the end of their fight. They plan to file an appeal.
