Western Kentucky company expanding, adding more jobs

Posted: Updated:

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear announced on Tuesday that a Western Kentucky company is expanding and adding jobs.

The Little Kentucky Smokehouse is expanding and that means new jobs for Union County.

The Little Kentucky Smokehouse is a family owned retail and wholesale fresh meat company that began in Uniontown back in the early 90s.

They announced they will be adding two new buildings at their existing site, one 16,000 square foot building for production and a 29,000 square foot building for shipping.

It's a $2.2 million project that owner Jimmy Baird says is necessary to keep the Little Kentucky Smokehouse cooking for the 70 people he employs.

"To keep in business, you've got to expand. If you don't grow, you'll die, literally. So the volume we have, you either expand, keep growing to keep up with demand or you do not," Baird said.

Baird says they've hired about 15 to 20 people in the last few weeks and expect to hire an additional 25 to 40.

The expansion is expected to take between one and two years.
