Gas leak causes evacuation of nearly a dozen homes in Henderson

Posted: Updated:

Several homes are evacuated due to a gas leak in Henderson.

It happened in the 2300 block of Green River Road between Beechwood Dr. and Whettstone Dr. near Bend Gate Elementary School.

Officials say a squirrel on a power line caused a nearby transformer to blow. That created a surge down the groundwire which, in turn, pierced the gas line.

Gas seeped into a sewage line, and that's what crews are working to fix right now. Those crews responded to the scene to relieve pressure on the gas valve, releasing gas into air.

Authorities say 10 homes have been evacuated and residents will not be able to return for a few hours.

Officials say school buses have been rerouted from the area because of the potential for sparks.

No official word, yet, on the condition of the squirrel.
