A woman traveling 981 miles by kayak to bring awareness of the mental health needs of veterans made a stop in Evansville on Sunday.

Mary Southerland is a former military contractor. Having served in the military, she has been struggling with post traumatic stress disorder and depression.

She has taken to the river in an effort to share her experiences with others. She said she wants veterans to be able to receive better mental health services when they return home.

"It's personally rewarding to be on the river and have these discussions, but I think the bigger blessing has been meeting the friends and family that I never knew existed from trying to connect on something that strangely has affected many peoples lives," Southerland said.

Southerland started her journey in Pittsburgh on August 4. She has plans to finish in Illinois on September 28.
