Police: Man accused of severely beating woman with metal pipe

An Evansville man is arrested after police say he beat a woman with a metal pipe.

According to a police affidavit, it happened Monday afternoon just after 2 at 121 W. Franklin St.

When police arrived at the scene they say a man, 54-year-old- Mark Cates, was laying on the ground. He told officers nothing had happened when he was asked. 

Officers say Cates was unable to stand on his own and later told police he had "half of a gallon" to drink.

A woman at the scene told officers that as she was trying to go to sleep Cates had attacked her with a metal pipe, striking her in the back, arms, stomach and head.

Witnesses at the scene confirmed to officers that Cates had attacked the woman.

According to a police affidavit, the victim refused medical treatment against the recommendation of the medical crew at the scene.

Cates was arrested and taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail. He is charged with Battery causing Serious Injury with a Deadly Weapon and Public Intoxication.
