Chairman resigns from Vanderburgh County Democratic Party

Posted: Updated:

The Chairman of the Vanderburgh County Democratic Party announced his resignation on Thursday.

Jack McNeely took control of the party in February 2012.

At the time the party was in serious financial trouble.

McNeely says he held three successful fundraiser's and brought the group to a more comfortable position.

The Chairman was also tasked with uniting a party that was divided after the 2011 mayoral election.

14 News spoke to McNeely during a fundraiser back in August of 2012 and at that time he said he was optimistic about getting the party back on track

"I'm very impressed with the turnout," said McNeely. "I think the party is headed in the right direction, and I think we are going to be successful in November."

Several Democrats did win re-election, but McNeely says he failed to ultimately unite the party.

He issued a statement on his resignation:

"As Chairman, I take full responsibility for the inability to unite the party. I truly believe a new approach is needed to solve this very serious issue. Therefore I am resigning as Party Chairman."

McNeely says he will continue to help the party when he is asked.
