County commissioners vote against proposed east side apartment complex

Posted: Updated:

Opponents showed up in force at the Vanderburgh County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday and got what they wanted.
In a unanimous vote, the commissioners voted against a proposed apartment complex near the Keystone subdivision..

After nearly two hours of hearing from speakers on both sides of this issue, county commissioners say the bottom line was this is not the proper land use for a piece of property off Heckel and North Green River Road.

The 245-unit complex was planned for the area. It's surrounded by single-family home subdivisions, and the owners of those homes were the ones that packed the Civic Center.

Opponents argued that the complex would increase crime, crowd schools, and decrease their property values.

"We are very pleased with the commissioners decision. We feel it is the right decision," one person said.

People speaking for the project, mostly contractors, said that it would create jobs and an additional tax base for the county.

There were certainly a lot of smiles from homeowners as they left the meeting.

A lawyer for the developer says there are no other plans in the works at this point, but there could be another project proposed sometime down the road.
