GREEN COUNTY, KY (WAVE) - It was the haunting crash that closed Interstate 64 westbound in Shelby County for more than 10 hours that immediately gave Jessica Hayse a bad feeling.
Soon it was confirmed, Jay Wood, the 33-year-old new father was one of two Good Samaritan's hit and killed after stopping to help victims in a crash.
"When I saw it on the news I just knew immediately that it was him," said Hayse, Wood's fiancé. "It was like I just felt him leave."
The couple just welcomed a baby girl into the world five weeks ago. She was early and her original due date was the day after the crash.
"The 15th of August, she decided to make her entrance," said Hayse. "Daddy was on the road. He made it back just in time to prep for the OR and he loved her so much. He was so excited. He loved all of his children and it was our gift from God."
While he lived in Louisville, he was originally from Green County and his family says it didn't surprise them at all to hear he was doing whatever he could to help others.
Wood's family found out he was actually traveling eastbound on Monday when he saw the accident and turned around to help. He stopped with Charles Burtt, 71, of Virginia. Both were hit while they were out of their car by a semi, which appeared to be switching lanes to get out of the way of the other crash.
"That was his character," said his mother Mary Wood. "He helped anybody he could."
Wood's family takes comfort in remembering him for the man he was. "He was just always there for everybody," said There's just nothing bad I could say about him."
He was a great father to two boys and a girl and a stepfather to three. Wood loved to coach Dragon Youth football in Louisville and be with his family as much as he could.
"He was a good person," said Wood. "I loved him. He had his faults, but he was a good son."
"He was my high school sweet heart and we were connected and I'm so grateful for that," said Hayse.
On Saturday Wood's youth football team will be playing their first home game at Doss High School. They plan to wear black jerseys to remember their coach.
