Popular Henderson hangout closes its doors

Posted: Updated:

After more than 30 years in business, a popular Henderson hangout has closed its door.

Gene's Restaurant on Green Street has served their last meals and has left some long time patrons without their meeting place.

A group of women had been eating breakfast together at Gene's for years. Sharon Shield had been eating there with her family since she was 13. She shared her last breakfast with her closest friends on Tuesday morning.

"The best memories that I have in lots of parts of my life all happen here with friends and family," Shield said.

Zack Thomason, a co-owner of Gene's with his mom, said its tough to close after over 30 years in business.

"There's a lot of competition out there now. Food costs have gotten really tight. It's just mom and pop are just struggling," Thomason said.

Thomason, whose father started Gene's back in the 70s, said he has shared a lot of good memories there.

"I'm going to miss it you know. I've been here this long and so many people are like family basically. It's going to be difficult, but business decisions have to be made," Thomason said.

As for Shield and her girlfriends, Gene's will be greatly missed.

"I don't know how we'll replace it," Shield said.

The Thomason's plan on selling the restaurant and aren't sure what's next for them. A lot of the customers 14 News spoke with on Tuesday hope they change their mind.
