More than 300 scooters impounded this year in Evansville

Posted: Updated:

Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma joined Evansville police for a ride along to learn about the push for stricter scooter laws.

Officers showed Bosma more than 300 scooters that have been impounded in the past year.

Speaker Bosma learned two-thirds of the accidents involving scooters also involve an operator with a suspended license. Bosma said many of those suspended operators don't carry insurance and sees the need for changes in the law.

"Very, very critical that we continue to have that discussion about the line between when these unregulated vehicles become a law enforcement issue and obviously that issue has been addressed here in a substantial way. I'd be more inclined to encourage regulation here with what I saw here today. Again, I think a unified law enforcement voice on this is pretty critical," Bosma said.

Bosma said he expects a bill will be introduced in the spring and hopes new regulations will be passed.
