CAROLINA FOREST, SC (WMBF) - Lunch between friends is now turning into a legal issue. The issue being where they had lunch - on a school campus without permission.
In a report from the Horry County Police Department, officers explain that on Thursday, August 29, parents called saying someone was on school property that shouldn't be.
Police found out they were talking about 17-year-old Logan Santos, a former student. However, his friends tell police Santos is now homeless and living out of a friend's car.
Santos was staying in that car while his friend went to class. During the lunch period, his friend returned to the car. They ate lunch together, walking around the campus until the lunch period ended.
Santos then went back to the car, waiting for his friend to get out of class.
The teen's family said it is his choice to not live at home.
"I'm more hurt that people are looking at us like we're just throwing him out on the street. That's not the case at all," explained Alfred Souza, Santos' step father.
Souza said the family has tried to help the teen.
"We've given him a beautiful house to live in. He chooses not to live here. He took off a week ago Wednesday and we haven't see him since," Souza said.
On that Wednesday, one day before Santos was on the school's campus for lunch, Souza explained he tried disciplining his step son by taking the door off of the teen's bedroom.
"I have rules in my house, just like any other parent," he said.
He still isn't giving up on his step son, and said he would still welcome him home.
"So many times, we've asked him to join the family, join the family. He doesn't want any part of the family," Souza expressed.
Logan Santos did reach out to us through Facebook, saying his friends are looking out for him now. That he isn't a bad person, he was just hungry and wanted something to eat. He worries about not being able to afford the trouble he is getting into for eating lunch at Carolina Forest High School.
Officials with Carolina Forest High School are not comfortable discussing this case specifically but explain they strive to make school a safe environment. Part of that is knowing exactly who is on the campus and why.
"If someone is here, that we are not aware should be, that could create a problem. They could be places they're not supposed to be," explained Principal Gaye Driggers with Carolina Forest High School.
Principal Driggers says the school does have a program in place to help students facing particular problems, like being homeless. They can help get supplies, food, or even clothing. However, Logan Santos is not currently a student enrolled at the high school.
According to the police report the student was suspended for bringing Santos on campus and not telling anyone.
As for Logan Santos, a warrant has been issued for his arrest. He was booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center on Tuesday, September 10 and charged with disturbing schools. He was given a $500 bond and remained incarcerated Thursday afternoon.
