Local group taking concerns about scooters to Indy

Posted: Updated:

A local member of a bikers' group that promotes safety on the road is taking his concerns about scooters to Indianapolis.

It's this kind of incident, that Abate of Indiana will address at its scooter summit in Indianapolis Thursday morning.

The state's laws governing mopeds hasn't been updated since 1991. Riders don't need a drivers' license or insurance.

Abate wants lawmakers to toughen laws on scooters. Primarily, members would like all scooters to be registered and their riders held accountable.

Region Director Greg Turner, of Evansville, says he'll be in Indy Thursday to show his support.

"We know that there were 24 fatalities involving these vehicles last year, but we don't know how many of them there are. So we don't know what type of representation that really is," Turner said.

The proposed regulations could be discussed during the legislature's spring session.

An online petition is still up. Click here for that petition.
