Riverport Authority to build new dock

The Owensboro Riverport Authority Board selected Smith Contractors Inc. Thursday afternoon to build a more than $6.7 million dollar dock facility.

The Riverport Authority says the current dock is almost 40 years old and can flood when the Ohio River rises. the new dock will be built in an area that is close to storage areas and can handle cargo during high water on the Ohio River. The Owensboro Riverport Authority Board authorized $3 million to buy a new crane. A new crane will be able to unload larger materials and will be located at the new dock. The Riverport Authority says the new dock and crane will make things more efficient.

Construction on the new dock will depend on the levels of the Ohio River, but the Riverport Authority hopes to have the project started this fall.
