Owensboro trying to secure funding to keep airport control tower open

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

Owensboro officials are trying to secure federal funding to keep the airport control tower open.

Airport Director Bob Whitmer is fearful that funding to man the tower will run out because the federal sequestration.

He says he's contacted city and county officials and asked for their help to lobby federal officials to support keeping all control towers open until a federal budget is completed.

Whitmer says the Owensboro-Daviess County Regional Airport's control tower and 8,000 foot runaway are two extremely important assets to make the area attractive for future airlines.

"My fear is if we lose the control tower that we won't be as attractive and we won't continue to this trend that we've had recently," Whitmer said.

As of now, the control tower at the airport will remain open through September 30.
