Family of young girl killed in train accident reacts to railroad changes

GIBSON CO., IN (WFIE) -

The family of a young girl killed in train accident this month is speaking out after news the crossing is about to get much safer.

In a statement to 14 News, CSX says the railroad and INDOT are reviewing the crossing with the intention of installing warning devices as soon as possible.

"There's two sets of tracks. The corn is over six feet tall," said Daniel Bullock, the victim's uncle. "The potential for another accident means that another family may be going through that type of pain and that's what needs to stop."

It was a typical August morning, a van ride across the tracks at County Road 550 South. Then tragedy struck.

"She was always running and she was always playing. She was always happy. I can tell you that it is definitely not quiet in heaven right now," Daniel said.

That was the day Daniel's four-year-old niece Andrea died in an accident that new warning signals may help prevent.

"We are happy and I'll be really thrilled and excited when I see that last bolt or nut turned or tightened and it actually begins to function," Daniel said.

CSX and INDOT are expected to cover the costs and Andrea's family can begin to heal.

"I would like to say Andrea look, 'This is not going to happen to another person because we are taking measures to fix it, because that's what people do.' This is for you. This is for you, Andrea," Daniel said.

There's no start date yet for the project. Gibson County Commissioner Gerald Bledsoe says INDOT has pledged $300,000. He hopes work will get underway soon.
