The Evansville City Council voted on naming a stretch of road "Don Mattingly Way" at their Monday night meeting.

The council passed the motion to rename a street after the Evansville native. The street, also known as North Main Street, runs by Bosse Field and into Garvin Park.

Earlier this month, Councilman Jonathon Weaver said the Hot Stove League and North Youth Baseball approached him and Councilwoman Stephanie Brinkeroff-Riley about the proposal earlier in the year.

"This is a great tribute to one of the greatest baseball players in MLB history who is an Evansville native," Weaver said. "What better way and place to do this than where he actually played baseball growing up."

14 News is told the Jacobsville Area Community Corporation, Evansville Otters, and the EVSC also support the resolution.

The Hot Stove League plans to have fundraiser's for signage and markers along the roadway.

Mattingly is a former Yankee slugger and is now the manager of the L.A. Dodgers.
