Man arrested at Elberfeld Post Office facing federal child porn charges

Posted: Updated:

On Friday, U.S. Marshals made an arrest at the Elberfeld Post Office. It's now been confirmed who was arrested and why.

The U.S. Attorney's Office tells 14 News that 59-year-old Floyd M. Thompson was arrested at the Elberfeld Post Office and is now facing federal child porn charges.

The United States Postal Service says Thompson started working at the Elberfeld office in 2005 and was recently named post master.

Shannon Smith says she works right next door at a gas station.

"He comes in here two or three times a day to our store," Smith said.

Smith says that Friday, the day Thompson was arrested, started off the same way.

"He came in here and was talking to one of our employees and got a drink, got his usual and went to work," Smith said.

"The gentleman, he was a nice enough guy. I'd have to go in occasionally and mail things myself, and I have no idea as to what happened," Elberfeld Town Board President Scott Dowers said.

An affidavit says Thompson "admitted to using file sharing software on numerous occasions to search for images or videos of underage girls."

It also says an FBI Child Exploitation Task Force member examined Thompson's computers and hard drive and believes he has thousands of images and videos of child porn, including some involving girls as young as three-years-old.

According to the affidavit, Thompson told authorities he was only interested in looking at child porn and never touched a child inappropriately.

14 News went to Thompson's Evansville home on Tuesday, but did not get an answer. His attorney says Thompson is staying at a halfway house in Evansville.

Thompson is facing charges of possession of sexually explicit material involving minors and receipt of sexually explicit material involving minors.

U.S. Attorney Joseph Hogsett was in Evansville Wednesday morning to speak about the case. Click here to see the full release on Hogsett's comments.

The affidavit makes no mention of any of these alleged crimes taking place or involving Thompson's job at the Elberfeld Post Office, that's just appears to be the place authorities arrested him.
