Early morning house fire in Evansville

An Evansville man says his dog likely saved his life after an overnight house fire.

The fire broke out around 12:30 a.m. at 112 E. Iowa, a few blocks east of Deaconess Hospital. Crews say they were able to get the fire under control in about a half hour.

Robert Shadrick was able to get outside to safety because of his dog alerting him.

Investigators tell 14 News the fire started in the back of the home in the kitchen area then spread upstairs to the front of the house.

We're told there is extensive damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
